Modular Rebar Cages

In 2022 FIRMA partnered up, once again, with Laing O’Rourke (LOR) to aid in the design of modular rebar cages. Primarily this modular approach is to expedite the onsite process at the new nuclear facility in Hinkley/Sizewell. The goal is to create the rebar cages for reinforced concrete walls offsite in a factory. These rebar cage modules would then be coupled together on site to form one cohesive unit prior to the pour.

The key challenge with the modular approach is ensuring that the modules can be connected easily onsite. The mesh construction must therefore be controlled. FIRMA is providing expertise in GD&T to help LOR in the early R&D phase of this project.

For initial investigations into the form, FIRMA has developed measuring rigs to analyse the variability of individual rebar lengths. This has included the use of 3D scanning technology which is being used to speed up the assessments over traditional dial gauge methods.

For larger assemblies FIRMA has designed a test rig for assessing the tolerances of rebar mesh panels.

And moving forward FIRMA is working towards using 3D laser scanning technology including photogrammetry techniques to enable the measurement of large scale 3 dimensional Re-Bare Cages.
